The work has involved a deep, committed search to find and photograph those people whose lives, to me, are a form of human pathos, exile, and poetic vision. I often feel "at home" with these folks, realizing that certain associations and stories from the pictures come close to biographical parts of my own life.

With a Guggenheim Grant in 1990, I travelled to desolate small towns where I hungered to talk with and photograph complete strangers. They gave me great sustenance on these solo journeys, for which I am grateful. While there are many stories about my photographs, I maintain that it is the colorful description in the photograph itself which matters most.
